The Compliance Trap is the institutional mechanism that pressures victims to adhere to procedures, timelines, or expectations that serve the institution’s interests rather than the victim’s safety or justice. It occurs when victims are told to “trust the process,” “wait their turn,” “follow protocol,” or “remain cooperative,” even after the system has demonstrated patterns of delay, minimization, or protection of perpetrators. The Compliance Trap leverages the Power Gradient and Institutional Tilt to create a false sense of obligation, making victims feel that deviating from the prescribed path will harm their credibility, jeopardize their case, or expose them to retaliation.
